Stepping into the Circle:

Boundaries and Holding Sacred Space–

Two, Three, and Four of Pentacles

You walk along the path for what feels like hours. Having left the clearing behind, you now make your way through what appears to be a wild meadow filled with flowers, bees, and butterflies. The path meanders its way gently through this wildlife wonderland, and every so often a scent of one of the flower patches makes its way to you on a gentle breeze. So far, you have heard no noises from the outside world—no other people, no cars, no signs of human life appear to be anywhere. A part of you feels a sense of relief to have found somewhere you can be totally alone, but another part of you is wondering how long it will take you to make your way back to civilization. As these competing thoughts wage a battle inside your head, they draw your focus from the outside world and distract you. You do not notice a stone in front of you and trip over it, landing face down in the dirt. As the shock of the fall starts to fade and you become aware of your surroundings, you hear the sound of sniggering, a light laughter as you ever so slowly lift your face from the dirt. Moving up onto all fours, you pick yourself up and dust yourself off only to see two young girls sitting at the end of what appears to be a stone labyrinth.

“How does the dirt taste this time of year?” one of the girls asks as she tries and fails to compose herself.

“Like dirt,” you reply, annoyed at being mocked.

The second girl walks towards you. “Forgive my sister, she finds humor in others’ misfortune.”

You flick your gaze between the two girls, who can’t be much older than seventeen. Although one of them is still laughing at you, something feels familiar about them. The second girl snaps her fingers in front of your face.

“Hey! Come back to earth before you end up with a dust-

covered tongue again.”

Blinking with annoyance, you turn your gaze to her and stare deep into her mud-colored eyes.

The first girl seems to have collected herself and makes her way to stand on the other side of you. “Do you have the coin?” she asks.

You turn and face her, stunned. “How did you know … ?”

But before you can finish, the second girl waves her hand at you. “You would not have found us if Mother had not given you the coin. Show it to us and we will prepare you to enter the circle.”

“The circle? You mean the labyrinth?”

The first girl rolls her eyes at you but turns to the second girl and sighs, “Every time! Why do we have to do this every time?”

The second girl responds to your question. “The circle is not a shape; it is a space … a sacred space. Only the chosen can enter the circle of Danu. The goddess herself has chosen you and deemed you worthy of entry.
